Using the Action Button for Instant Voice Notes
How to set up your iPhone Action Button to start recording voice notes instantly.
The Fastest Way to Capture a Thought
The iPhone 15 Pro introduced the Action Button, a customizable physical button on the side of the device. NoteLLM integrates with this feature, turning it into a one-press shortcut for voice recording. No unlocking, no app switching, no tapping through menus.
Why It Matters
The value of a voice note depends heavily on how quickly you can start recording. Ideas are fleeting. By the time you unlock your phone, find the app, and tap the record button, you have already lost the first few seconds of your thought, or the thought itself.
The Action Button eliminates that delay. Press it, and NoteLLM starts recording immediately. Press it again to stop. The entire interaction takes less than two seconds.
Setting It Up
Setting up NoteLLM with the Action Button takes about 30 seconds:
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Scroll down and tap Action Button.
- Swipe through the available actions until you see Shortcut.
- Select a shortcut that launches NoteLLM's recording function.
Alternatively, you can set it up from within NoteLLM's settings. The app provides a guided setup flow that walks you through each step.
Once configured, the Action Button will launch NoteLLM and begin recording whenever you press it, regardless of whether the app is currently open.
Practical Use Cases
Walking or commuting. You can start recording without breaking stride. Keep your phone in your pocket, press the side button, and start talking.
Driving. While we always recommend pulling over for anything that requires attention, a quick voice note at a red light or in a parked car is safer than typing on a phone.
In meetings. Press the button discreetly under the table to capture a key point without disrupting the conversation or looking at your phone.
Waking up with an idea. Keep your phone on the nightstand. One press in the dark and you are recording, no need to squint at a bright screen.
Tips for Best Results
- Hold the button for about one second to trigger the action. A quick tap may not register depending on your device settings.
- Speak clearly for the first word or two. The microphone needs a moment to activate, so do not start with the most important word of your note.
- Check your default recognition mode. The Action Button recording uses whatever mode you last configured in NoteLLM settings. If you want local mode for privacy, make sure it is set before you rely on the button.
Compatible Devices
The Action Button is available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, iPhone 16 series, and later models. If your iPhone does not have an Action Button, you can still use NoteLLM's in-app one-tap recording, which is nearly as fast once the app is open.
A Small Feature with a Big Impact
The Action Button integration is not a flashy feature. It does not get its own marketing page or demo video. But for regular NoteLLM users, it quietly becomes one of the most-used features of the app. Reducing the time between thought and recording from ten seconds to two seconds changes how often you actually capture ideas.
