How NoteLLM protects your data and respects your privacy
Our Privacy Commitment
NoteLLM is built with privacy as a core principle. We believe your voice recordings and notes are deeply personal, and you should have full control over how they are processed and stored.
Local Recognition Mode
When you use local (on-device) recognition, NoteLLM achieves zero data collection. Here is what that means:
- Audio stays on your device. Your voice recordings are never sent to any server.
- Transcription happens locally. The speech recognition engine runs entirely on your iPhone, iPad, or Mac using Apple's built-in speech framework.
- No network required. Local recognition works completely offline, so you can use NoteLLM in airplane mode, in areas without cell service, or anywhere you lack an internet connection.
- No analytics on your content. NoteLLM does not analyze, index, or transmit the content of your notes in local mode.
If privacy is your top priority, local recognition mode gives you complete assurance that your data never leaves your device.
Cloud Recognition Mode
Cloud recognition sends your audio to a cloud-based speech recognition service for processing. This mode offers higher accuracy, particularly for complex vocabulary and noisy environments. When using cloud mode:
- Audio is transmitted securely over an encrypted connection.
- Audio is processed for transcription and is not retained after processing is complete.
- Only the transcription result is returned to your device.
If you handle sensitive information, consider using local recognition mode instead.
Data Storage
All notes you create in NoteLLM are stored locally on your device. NoteLLM does not operate its own cloud storage or sync service for user notes. Your notes remain under your control.
Permissions
NoteLLM requests only the permissions it needs:
- Microphone -- required for voice recording. Without this permission, the app cannot capture audio.
- Speech Recognition -- required for transcription. This permission enables the on-device or cloud speech recognition engine.
No other permissions are requested. NoteLLM does not access your contacts, photos, location, or any other personal data.
