Action Button Setup
Start recording instantly with the iPhone Action Button
What is the Action Button?
The Action Button is a physical button on the side of iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and all iPhone 16 models. It replaces the traditional mute switch and can be customized to launch apps or trigger specific actions with a single press.
NoteLLM integrates with the Action Button so you can start a voice recording instantly, without unlocking your phone or navigating to the app first.
Supported Devices
The Action Button is available on:
- iPhone 15 Pro
- iPhone 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 16
- iPhone 16 Plus
- iPhone 16 Pro
- iPhone 16 Pro Max
If your iPhone does not have an Action Button, you can still use NoteLLM normally by opening the app and tapping the record button.
How to Set Up
- Open Settings on your iPhone.
- Tap Action Button (or search for it in Settings).
- Swipe through the available actions until you see Shortcut.
- Tap Choose a Shortcut and select the NoteLLM recording shortcut.
- Close Settings. The Action Button is now configured.
From now on, press and hold the Action Button to start a NoteLLM recording. Press it again to stop recording and begin transcription.
Usage Tips
- Quick capture. The Action Button is perfect for moments when you need to record a thought immediately, such as while walking, driving (when parked), or in a meeting.
- Lock screen recording. You can trigger recording even from the lock screen, making it the fastest way to capture voice notes.
- Combine with local mode. For truly instant recording with no network dependency, pair the Action Button with local recognition mode. Your recording starts and transcribes entirely on-device.
Changing the Assignment
If you later want to assign the Action Button to a different function, simply return to Settings > Action Button and choose a new action. You can always reassign it back to NoteLLM whenever you like.
Troubleshooting
If the Action Button does not trigger NoteLLM:
- Make sure NoteLLM is installed and has been opened at least once.
- Verify the Action Button is assigned to the correct NoteLLM shortcut in Settings > Action Button.
- Restart your iPhone if the shortcut does not appear in the list.
- Ensure you are pressing and holding the button, not just tapping it briefly.
